Washington Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum for students from kindergarten through high school. Our classes have supported small group and individual instruction in all academic areas based on the Core Content Standards of our state and the student’s IEP. Technology is integrated into the curriculum with emphasis on the use of research based instructional programs. Examples of this include the high school Carnegie Math program and our software Intensive Phonics and Reading Horizons programs.
Curriculum Maps
Our school is very proud of its development of curriculum maps for all core subjects at every grade level. Using the New Jersey Core Content Standards and appropriate materials, equipment and resources, teachers have mapped instruction for the 10 month school year by assigning the time, content, units, skills, resources and standards in each content area. This process has ensured that students receive the scope and sequence of instruction consistent with local district curriculum and has fostered cross-curricular themes. Our maps are updated and revised each year since curriculum mapping is a dynamic process. By keeping students in parallel instructional programs, Washington Academy is able to return students to their local school districts without a loss of appropriate grade level content instruction.
Specialized Reading and Math Programs
Although students may receive parallel district instruction, many students at Washington Academy require specialized programs in reading and math due to their unique educational needs. Our school offers the Wilson Reading program, Reading Horizons, Discover Intensive Phonics, Reading Advantage and Houghton Mifflin Intervention programs. High school students struggling in literacy may receive instruction in a Reading Lab which has been developed to address their individual needs.
In the area of mathematics we have specialized computer software programs at Middle and High School levels. These programs provide individualized instruction in Fundamentals of Math, Geometry, Algebra I and II.
Assessment
Norm referenced educational achievement assessments are used with students at the beginning and end of each school year. Our purpose is to measure academic growth in reading and mathematics. These assessments also help us to provide the local school district with information to develop appropriate annual IEP goals and objectives based on student progress. Scores from the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement and/or the Basic Achievement Skills Inventory are available for districts and parents.
