Career Exploration/
Transition |
High school students at Washington Academy take courses
in career exploration to broaden the spectrum of post
graduate employment opportunities and enhance their
abilities to enter the work force. Three program levels
have been designed to provide a transition curriculum
which exposes them to job and career clusters and off
site work based activities under the supervision of a
certified teacher. |

Population Served |
Washington Academy is a
New Jersey Approved Private School for the Disabled that
serves students with mild to moderate behavioral and
learning disabilities, aged 5-21. Washington Academy has
been in existence since 1982 and currently serves
students from public school districts in 8 counties. The
Academy strives to maximize the educational, social and
emotional well-being of each student. There are
approximately 60 professionals assigned to educate 180
students, with 2 to 3 teachers per classroom. Six
social workers oversee all in and out of school needs
and they provide character education and social skills
training, as part of the schools curriculum. Group and
individual counseling is provided, consistent with each
students Individualized Education Program. The
educational program of Washington Academy is
designed to meet the New Jersey Core Content Standards
and meet the requirements of the students’ IEP. Time is invested with each student,
family and sending school district, in order to assist
students toward achieving their goals. |
