Washington
Academy has been serving elementary, middle and high school
students with special needs for over 25 years. Founded in 1982,
the school is a state approved program for students in grades K
through 12. Over the years it has been Washington Academy’s
mission to work with hundreds of children and young adults to
help them succeed academically and behaviorally.
The school
is unique due to its low student teacher ratio which is
maintained by having small classes with two or more teachers in
every classroom. Our youngest students have four specially
trained teachers in their classroom.
The
program focus is to provide specialized individually designed
instruction and a structured behavior program to meet the unique
needs of each student. We are committed to the school’s mission
to motivate and support students by nurturing their self esteem,
academic progress and social skills. Positive behavior supports
are the cornerstone of our program which maximizes student
participation and academic growth.
Our school
educates 180 students each year from over forty-five sending
districts throughout six New Jersey counties. The key components
of the program include:
-
A safe
nurturing school environment with built in positive
behavioral supports;
-
School
curriculum based individually on the student’s IEP and the
New Jersey Core
Curriculum Content Standards;
-
Small
classes and small group instruction with a low student to
faculty ratio;
-
Personalized supportive instruction by caring teachers; and
-
Curricular support to encourage achievement.
We have
found tremendous success for our students using the latest
technology to help them succeed academically. Our computer
center and classrooms provide student access to the internet and
the digital world. We are using state of the art nationally
recognized programs in our reading lab, middle school and high
school mathematics classes. The Careers Center is equipped with
a mobile laptop cart and career work stations. We focus on
helping our students become independent learners who will be
able to use these skills to access information in their adult
lives. |
